Fundamental Movement PilatesCertification

Fundamental Movement Pilates is a conceptual format of the work created by Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates did not mean for his work to be an exercise of aerobic activity but one of controlled and patterned movement.  The format that he developed was to help individuals, not only dancers and boxers, change and re-create a systematic pattern of movement that permitted the individual to move in a pain free environment.

Pilates Machine classes not only strengthen and balance core muscles, but also encourage repatterning of adaptive behaviors.  These bahaviors are derived from compensatory patterns resulting from trauma.  Pilates will strengthen the postural muscles needed for proper kinetic movement.

Students who complete this course will acquire a deep understanding of movement and its connection to chronic pain. This comprehension will not only be critical in the Pilates studio, but also significant in everyday life.

With Dennis Gibbons LMT as the lead instructor, students can expect a unique teaching style and a holistic approach to the function of human body movement. With 23 years of therapeutic massage and movement experience, Dennis will guide students through the intricate patterns of fundamental movement. By learning how to recognize and resolve postural inefficiencies, students will be able to offer more constructive correction when teaching someone in a studio setting.

During the first class, a video will be shown as an introduction to the history of the method. There will be an instruction on breathing techniques synchronized with movement. Students will learn the anatomy and physiology of the first five progressions on the Reformer and apply the progressions to Fundamental Movement.

Part 2 through 7 will include a review of the concepts learned in previous parts. Students will be challenged on the anatomy and physiology of the movements on the Reformer, Cadillac and Chair. The days will close with the application of the machines to fundamental movement.
Following the classroom hours the apprentice will perform 30 hours of observation followed by 30 hours of assisting in the Chagrin Valley Wellness Center studio. During the observation period the apprentice will observe the many different movements, and how they pertain to an individual’s problems, with a current certified instructor of Fundamental Movement Pilates℠. It is during this period that all of the information obtained in the class room will start to take a pure form.  After the observation hours the apprentice will assist a certified instructor in an actual studio session. Under this supervision the apprentice will gain the necessary experience to begin instructing others in this format of Pilates movement.

Full certification in Fundamental Movement Pilates requires 45 classroom hours, 30 Observation & 30 Assisting hours.  Observation and Assisting hours are completed at Chagrin Valley Wellness Center by appointment.
